The Artroom is alive, with the sound of music

Andy Warhol created this image, but it is also the image associated with the band, The Velvet Underground, a band which Warhol himself managed.

Today the Art 401 class was introduced to the Elements of Art, in particular the first of seven elements; Line.

After the introduction, and some notes on line (see the notes listed under the Art 401 Class Notes at the top of the page) we began an exercise in “music interpretation”. The idea is simple, while listening to an assortment of music (selected by me) the students move their pencil to match the sounds they are lisening to. There is a definate parrallel between the mood and music, as there is with line and mood, this exercise brings all three of these things together.

While listening to the music there are some particular instructions, all easy to follow, and the exercise will continue tomorrow. It’s an important in class exercise though, and any students who miss it will be expected to make an appointment with me to arrange time to make up what they missed. They are easy marks to earn, but not participating is a sure fire way to lose them.

For those who are interested the music list from today’s class was;
  1. Song For Krantz (reprise) – Ian Toms
  2. The Air Conditioned Nightmare – Mr. Bungle
  3. Black Sheep – Metric
  4. Diamonds On My Windshield – Tom Waits
  5. Rebellion (lies) – The Arcade Fire
  6. Carmina Burana – Carl Orff
  7. Kidda – Natacha Atlas
